Starting with the axial skeleton-

1. Skull (22):

    The skull is the most complex part of the human skeleton, containing 22 bones. The bones of the skull can be divided into two groups: 

(i) The cranium (8): Which encloses the brain, and the facial bones, which form the face. The cranium is made up of 8 bones, including the frontal bone, parietal bones, occipital bone, temporal bones, sphenoid bone, and ethmoid bone. 

(ii) The facial bones (14): It consist of 14 bones, including the maxilla, mandible, nasal bones, and zygomatic bones.


Moving down the axial skeleton-

2. Vertebral Column (33):

(i) The cervical spine (7): It consists of seven vertebrae, known as C1 to C7. 

(ii) The thoracic spine (12): It consists of 12 vertebrae, known as T1 to T12.

(iii) The lumbar spine (5): It consists of five vertebrae, known as L1 to L5. 

(iv) The sacrum (5): A triangular-shaped bone at the base of the spine, is made up of five fused vertebrae and 

(v) The coccyx (4): It is also known as the tailbone, is made up of four fused vertebrae.


3. The ribcage/ribs (24): 

     It is composed of 24 ribs, every 12 on each side of the body. It is forming the thoracic region. 

       (i) The true ribs (14): The first seven pairs of ribs are known as the true ribs, and they attach directly to the sternum at the front of the chest. 

      (ii) The false ribs (6): The next three pairs of ribs are known as the false ribs, as they do not attach directly to the sternum, but rather to the cartilage of the seventh rib. 

     (iii) The floating ribs (4): The final two pairs of ribs are known as the floating ribs, as they do not attach to the sternum at all.

4. Sternum (1):

          The sternum is a long, flat bone, composed of several parts- manubrium, body, xyphoid. It is only one in human skeleton.


      Moving on to the appendicular skeleton-

5. The shoulder/pectoral girdle (4):

     It consists of two bones, the clavicle and scapula-

(i) The clavicle (2): It is also known as the collarbone, is a long, slender bone that connects the sternum to the scapula. 

(ii) The scapula (2): It is also known as the shoulder blade, is a triangular-shaped bone that sits on the back of the ribcage.


6. The upper limbs (60): 

    (i)  Humerus (2): It is made up of one bone, the humerus, which runs from the shoulder to the elbow. 

   (ii) The radius (2): It is the lateral bone of the forearm, it is two in number one on each side. Radius forming the lower part of hand along with the ulna bone.

   (iii) The ulna (2): It is the medial bone of the forearm.

   (iv) Skeleton of the hand (54): It is composed of 54 bones, 27 bones on each side. The hand bones arranged in three groups-

  • eight carpal bones, 
  • five metacarpal bones, and 
  • 14 phalanges.


 7. The hip/pelvic girdle (2):

  (i) Hip bone: Each hip bone is composed of three fused bones: the ilium, ischium, and pubis. It helps of forming the pelvis.

 8. Bones of the lower limbs (60):

    (i) The Femur or thigh-bone (2): It is the longest and strongest bone in the human body and runs from the hip to the knee. One on each side.

   (ii) The Patella (2): The patella bone is placed in front of the knee joint. It is somewhat triangular-shaped with rounded margins and an apex directing downwards. One on each side.

The lower leg is made up of two bones which run from the knee to the ankle-

   (ii) The Tibia (2): It is the second largest and strongest bone of the lower limbs and in the lower part of leg. It have two in number, one on each leg.

   (iii) The Fibula (2): The fibula is very slender and is the lateral bone of the leg. It has an upper end or head, a shaft and a lower end which forms the lateral malleolus. One on each side.

   (iv) Skeleton of the foot (52): It is composed of 52 bones, a set of 26 on each side, including seven tarsal bones, five metatarsal bones, and 14 phalanges.


The hyoid bone:

        The hyoid bone is a small, U-shaped bone located in the neck between the chin and the thyroid cartilage of the larynx. It is the only bone in the human body that does not articulate with any other bone, but instead is suspended in place by muscles and ligaments.

       The hyoid bone is not considered part of the axial or appendicular skeleton, which are the two major divisions of the human skeletal system. Instead, it is considered an independent bone that sits in the neck and provides attachment for muscles involved in swallowing and speech.


One reason the hyoid bone is not considered part of the skeletal system is that it does not articulate with any other bones in the body. Unlike other bones, the hyoid bone is held in place by a complex system of muscles and ligaments.

Another reason is that the hyoid bone is not essential for survival, unlike other bones that protect vital organs or support the weight of the body. While the hyoid bone plays an important role in speech and swallowing, it can be surgically removed without significant negative consequences.
